Real stories · Slippers with an actual job

My feet ached even at home — it turned out my slippers were the one shoe I'd never taken seriously

Slippers with an actual job — that's what these turned out to be. I'm 67, and my feet had started aching at home. Not on walks, not in town — at home, standing at the kitchen counter, going up and down for laundry.

I blamed my age, the floors, even the weather, before I finally looked down at the flat slippers on my feet and realised something rather obvious: I spend more hours in my slippers than in almost any other shoe I own, yet they were giving my feet virtually nothing.

What I needed was proper footwear that happened to live indoors.

Polenne slippers at home

By the bed, where the day starts — feet in, no bending.

Then I found the Polenne from Studio Nomi — cosy slippers with the structure and support I'd normally expect from an everyday shoe.

I chose the blue, which is a surprisingly cheerful thing to see beside the bed on a dark morning.

What surprised me most was how different they felt from my old slippers. The cushioned footbed feels supportive underfoot, while the sturdier sole makes them feel much more substantial when I'm standing around the kitchen or walking across hard floors.

They're backless too, so there's no fuss first thing in the morning. Feet in and off you go.

And then there's the soft fleece lining, which makes cold floors considerably less unpleasant.

I'd been careful about choosing supportive shoes whenever I went outside, then spent hours every day at home wearing the least supportive footwear I owned. It suddenly seemed rather silly.

Tea, armchair, feet up — exactly where slippers belong.

After wearing them around the house, they've quickly become the pair I reach for every morning.

The little wedge feels low and steady rather than like a heel, and I particularly like being able to slip them straight on without bending down.

They've been especially useful on the hard floors in the kitchen. They feel much more substantial underneath than the thin, flat slippers I'd been wearing before.

And despite feeling sturdier, they still have that cosy slipper feeling I wanted. The soft lining keeps them comfortable without making them feel like a heavy outdoor shoe.

Mine were £24.95 in the sale, down from £50. Considering how many hours I actually spend wearing slippers at home, that suddenly didn't seem unreasonable at all.

The soft lining and supportive sole up close — cosy on top, substantial underneath.

If you've spent years buying decent shoes for outside and then coming home to completely flat slippers, the Polenne might be worth a look.

They're still easy and cosy enough to feel like proper slippers — just with a little more underneath your feet.
