Real stories · Winter warmth without the bobble
Every winter the same choice: bobble hat or freezing ears. I finally found another option.
Every winter I seem to have the same dilemma. The woolly bobble hat — lovely and warm, but I look like I'm heading off sledging. Or no hat at all — much smarter, right up until ten minutes into the dog walk when my ears are absolutely freezing.
I'd more or less accepted that those were my two choices. Be warm and look as though I'm dressed for the school playground, or look reasonably put-together and spend the entire walk wishing I'd brought a hat.
Then I came across the Lauvine from Studio Nomi.
The one by the door now — ready for every properly cold morning.
It's a wonderfully fluffy faux-fur hat with a thick, dense pile that keeps the cold out, but without the scratchy wool feeling I've never particularly enjoyed.
The inside feels beautifully soft and comfortable, even when I've had it on for the whole walk.
But the shape is what really won me over.
It feels less like something I've reluctantly put on because it's cold and more like part of the outfit. My same old navy winter coat suddenly looks considerably more put-together with it.
First frosty outing — warm ears, old coat suddenly looking rather smarter.
Its first proper outing was a frosty walk to the paper shop.
I got an “ooh, very glamorous” from a neighbour who's known me for thirty years, which made me laugh. Since then it's been on every properly cold dog walk.
It even came with me to a freezing afternoon at football, where for once I wasn't the person standing on the touchline complaining that I couldn't feel my ears.
That's really what I like about it. It does the practical job I actually bought it for, but doesn't look purely practical.
It feels cosy and substantial without having the look of a traditional woolly winter hat.
The wonderfully soft faux fur up close — thick, fluffy and made for cold mornings.
If, like me, you've spent every winter choosing between a bobble hat you don't particularly love and freezing ears, the Lauvine is well worth a look.
It gives me the warmth I wanted without making me feel as though I've sacrificed the rest of my outfit to get it.
